How GeoThermal Works

When you hold your hand over your air conditioning unit during summer, you can feel hot air being released. This hot air is actually the heat being removed from your house by the cooling system. A geothermal cooling system removes heat from your home just like a conventional system, but discharges the heat into a water loop rather than the air. The water is circulated through pipes in multiple deep holes in the ground. The near-constant temperature and abundant mass of the earth around these holes draws the heat from the water which, now cooled, can return to the unit to absorb more heat from the house. A geothermal system can cool and heat your home using 40-50% less energy than your current air conditioning system. Let us know if you are interested in finding out if a geothermal cooling and heating system is right for you.

Simply put, a geothermal system doesn’t heat or cool your home by burning fossil fuels or using electricity in the ways you’re used to. Instead, it uses electricity to access the near-constant temperatures found deep in the earth. Geothermal works on a very simple principle: No matter what the air temperature is outside, the temperature under the surface of the earth remains constant. This means that during the summer, the earth is cooler than the outside air and during the winter, the earth is warmer than the outside air.

The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized geothermal systems as one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool your home. Why is this important? You may not realize it, but well over 50% of your home energy bill goes towards heating and cooling. This just goes to show that a geothermal system gives you a significant opportunity for savings. In fact, a typical geothermal system operates with such efficiency that it can return up to four dollars of heat for every dollar spent on electricity. Geothermal systems can also be configured to reduce your need for energy to heat the water you use for bathing, doing laundry, and washing dishes. Because it uses the constant temperature of the earth, geothermal is a sustainable, renewable, energy source that will never run out, and remain efficient year after year, in every kind of weather.
